The things they don't always tell you...

Ok, I sure this list will grow, but here is what I have discovered so far... And Beware, there might be a couple of TMI moments...

**If you have never been pregnant, and don't want to freak out each month... I'd skip this next paragraph...**

I felt like I was going to start my period, cramp-y, bloated, achy boobs. Nothing out of the ordinary, well, except that I had no visitor at the end, just a pink line.

PINK IS PINK. Doesn't matter how dark that second line is, it's pink. Don't be deceived by the "control" line, the second line can be faint as all get out. BUT guess what, you are still knocked up. Also, on the same line of thought... It's good to take it first thing in the morning. You have a build up in the hormones in you first pee of the day. Money saving hint. Don't waste money buying 2 packs for 10-15 bucks the store. Buy them from the dollar store, they cost... a dollar! And they work. Although you have to use this weird dropper thing. Which is really inconvenient when you are trying to take a test first thing in the morning.

You always hear that pregnant women pee a lot, right?  One would think that would be in the 3rd trimester when you have a little person using your bladder as a punching bag or trampoline. Wrong. It happens right way. Super annoying. I don't enjoy peeing every 2 hours, especially in the middle of the night. Sure, my water intake is gone up dramatically, mostly thanks to the dry mouth (don't think that is normal...) but really? THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT!
Come on! Let me get my sleep while I still can!

Lucky you! You don't have to figure out your conception date! Your due date is calculated off the first day of your last period. (I guess that is why they put it on all those doctor forms...) Also, when you call the doctor to make your first appointment, know it... So you don't sound like a doofus doing calculations over the phone (thanks S!) It will be scheduled between 8-10 weeks and it is about 2 hours long.

As mentioned in my previous post... You can hear the heart beat as early as 5-6 weeks in you submerge yourself in the bathtub you can make it out. Much less heart stopping if you know its going to happen. You need it to be pretty quiet for it to work, also. No fans or TV running in the next room. The dryer is also, very bad.

Hello Boobs! If you thought your PMS boobs were bad... you have no idea. Beware of gravity. Standing up in the morning... Taking off your bra... OMG OUCH! Speaking of boobs... I'm not to this point yet, but I have been told:

Wait as long as you can to get them…my tatas were about as big as they were going to get by 8-10 weeks, so i would at least wait til then (if you can) because you don’t want to have to buy a bunch of them- they are expensive! I would just get nursing bras from the beginning- because your kazoos will still be big when they are all filled with milk afterward, so you can wear them through your pregnancy and then again afterward too (again, trying to limit the number of bras you have to buy!) I got one called I think Le Mystere from Nordstrom- but they have a couple they can fit you with. All their nursing bras are in the back- so you have to ask a sales associate for help & they will fetch them for you. For the first 2 days, I thought the bra was really stiff and it rubbed me funny, but then it worked itself in and I LOVE it now. It’s also really pretty and way more supportive than the ones you will find elsewhere. You can order them online through Nordstrom too, but I would highly recommend going in to get fitted properly. The one I got was $66, and I got 2 – 1 to wear and 1 to wash. Expensive, but you can use them through multiple pregnancies, and it’s worth it to have a supportive bra, and also to not feel hideous and fat and gross when you look at yourself in it!

You don't need to shop at motherhood maternity for all your pregnancy needs and spend all of your monies. For pants, I'm told that GAP has cute, comfortable & affordable jeans.  Target has a good selection of reasonably priced fashionable maternity cloths. (Selection varies on you location, so if your nearby store doesn't have a great selection it may be worth stopping by another. Think about areas that produce lots of babies...)

Books that have been highly recommended:
The Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy
The Happiest Baby Guide to Great Sleep: Simple Solutions for Kids from Birth to 5 Years. ( I was told to read this at least once)

Swaddle blankets are a life saver, they might fight it for a few minutes but then they are a super happy baby.

Foods & Stuff to avoid: (and no they are not old wives tales, this is what the FDA agrees with http://www.fda.gov/Food/ResourcesForYou/HealthEducators/ucm081785.htm)

  • Hot dogs & lunch meat
  • Soft cheeses like feta and Brie, UNLESS they are made with pasteurized milk! Then your safe, just check the label.
  • Unpasteurized anything that is raw.
  • Big fish, like shark, sword fish, king mackerel. But salmon, trout, halibut, all good as long as they are cooked and in moderation. Boo! No sushi.
  • Cleaning the catbox / flowerbeds & such with cat poo. (SWEET, almost makes up for no sushi!)
  • Be extra careful in handling raw meats & the tools & surfaces used in preparing them. (pretty common sense, but...) Also, be extra sure that your meats are cooked to the correct temperature. A meat thermometer might be a good investment.

Ok. I'm out of advice for now. I'm sure I will have more as it is shared or experienced.
